Botox
What is Botox?
Botox removes wrinkles by reversibly paralysing muscles. Wrinkles present without the use of facial expression muscles require additional therapies, such as fillers.
Botox improves symptoms without surgery, the procedure lasts a short time, and every day life is possible straight afterwards.
Characteristics of Botox
One can notice the paralysis a day after injection - at the earliest - and it becomes marked when three days have passed. The effect gradually increases and reaches its peak at one month, at which point it starts to decline, but there are differences amongst individuals and effects may last around 3-6 months. As the effect starts to gradually decline after a month, facial expressions become more natural.
Factoring in individual differences, Botox injections are done every 4-6 months.
There is no swelling or pain following injections.
Applications of Botox
Square jaw
Muscle atrophies when unused. Thus, by reducing the movement of masseter muscles, Botox can reduce the volume of square jaw. The effect becomes noticeable approximately 3-4 weeks after injection, and it usually lasts 6 months, although there are individual differences. For long-lasting atrophy effect, regular injections every 5-6 months are recommended.
Calf muscles
Botox is effective for reducing the volume of calf muscles. Since it selectively reduces the volume of muscles, it does not make the entire leg thinner. The muscles become soft 3-4 weeks after injection, and the reduction in calf volume becomes gradually noticeable afterwards. However, excessive leg exercise and high heels should be avoided.
Wrinkles
Wrinkles on skin are formed as the muscles of facial expression are repeatedly used. These eventually become permanently visible due to age. Botox smoothes out these wrinkles by relaxing these muscles of facial expression. Effects are visible 1-2 weeks after injection, and last 5-6 months.
